ITALIAN TRAIN DERAILED: ELEVEN DEAD
Eleven people have died and nearly 30 were injured when a train was derailed after it ploughed into a mudslide.
The train was travelling near Merano in the Sud Tyrol-Alto Adige region.
Initial reports said the mudslide was caused after a pipe broke in an underground irrigation system in an apple orchard, sending water cascading down the mountainside and destabilising the soil.
Now the fear is that the number of dead could rise.
The railway line was inaugurated in 2005 and is one of the newest in Italy.
