AMNESTY’S REPORT CRITICISES ITALY FOR IMMIGRATION POLICY AND TORTURE LEGISLATION
Amnesty’s annual report on human rights slums Italy and the Italian foreign Minister Franco Frattini rejects the claim. In particular, Amnesty criticises Italy for refusing entry to immigrants at sea, putting their lives at risk. “Amnesty’s report is a slur on the work of the men and women in our police forces” said Frattini - ”Italy is the country in Europe that has saved most people at sea. I reject the report.”. The report also focuses on Italy’s failure to introduce the crime of torture into ordinary legislation: in these conditions, without a torture legislation, there is always a potential risk of cases like Stefano Cucchi’s, since physical abuse inflicted by public officials in the course of duty is treated as a minor offence.
